American Elm

Ulmus americanus

Appearance: This native North American tree grows quickly (especially when young). Growth habit is broad and upright and can be pruned to have foot traffic walk beneath it. Trunks on older trees could reach to seven feet across. Leaves are dark green throughout the year, fading to yellow before dropping in fall. In early spring, before the new leaves unfold little green flowers appear on the tree stalks which turn into seedpods. The seeds are quite popular with both birds and wildlife.

Care and Maintenance:  Due to Elm Scale you cannot prune this tree from April 1- September.

Thrives in rich, loamy, well-drained soil but tolerates clay and, when mature, moderate drought. Requires full sun to partial shade.
